Vitamin C Shower Filters

The actual amount of HC1 that could be created by this type of filtration and its possible effects on consumers has not been documented.

They also don't last long and must usually be replaced after about two months.

KDF Shower Filters

KDF is frequently found in home showerhead filters because of its effectiveness at higher operating temperatures and flow rates.

  Low-flow shower heads must alwys be used with a shower filter and can significantly reduce your   household water consumption without a noticeable difference to your shower experience.

There are no shower filters on the market that effectively remove chloramine, chlorine by-products, pesticides and other toxic chemicals.

Because they must filter hot water and at a relatively high speed, shower filters are generally not effective in chlorine and chemical removal. Ideally, you want a back washable filtration system that offers a variety of methods to remove different contaminants

Shower filters also do not remove the carcinogenic byproducts of chlorine in your shower water. When chlorine is added to water for the purpose of killing bacteria it interacts with organic material in the water and forms a number of carcinogenic byproducts including the Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids. These are groups of compounds known as volatile organics. These groups of compounds have been determined to be linked to cancer and are regulated as a result by EPA. These chlorine byproducts are far more dangerous to you than chlorine. There are other unregulated byproducts which are also carcinogenic.

Shower filters also do not remove chloramines. Some filter companies make the claim that they do but I do not believe them. They may reduce chloramines slightly. Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia which is increasingly used as a replacement or in combination with chlorine. Chloramine produces lower levels of Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic acids but produces other byproducts which are equally dangerous.

So when you use a shower filter you may reduce some chlorine but do nothing to address the other carcinogenic compounds in your shower water.
